Welcome to the first episode of Stuff and Things – the podcast inspired by the book which morphed from the blog.

Two decades of adventures in advertising, marketing, and life’s quirky corners. Expect bite-sized musings, random wisdom, and the occasional 3am epiphany that may or may not hold up by breakfast. It’s not a self-help guide or a strategy manual—just an honest rummage through a creative mind’s junk drawer.

Intrigued? Watch or listen on.

Recorded outside in Bristol, England. It was windy. And there’s sea and boat noises.

Find the book Stuff and Things on Amazon.

Episode 1 – Introduction

Hello there, and welcome to “Stuff and Things” – the podcast where we attempt to make sense of two decades – maybe more – in business without resorting to PowerPoint. I’m Nicholas Gill, your somewhat bemused host, and I’ll be your guide through this rather haphazard collection of professional musings.

Now, you might be wondering about the rather vague title. Well, after more than 20 years in the business world – yeah, I know, does it show? I think it does. – Yeah, probably then some. I’ve amassed more ideas, notes, and random thoughts than there are biscuits in a packet of Hobnobs? Which is not that many thoughts. That’s probably a really bad analogy to start on but anyway.

Let me tell you, my memory these days is less like a well-organised filing cabinet and more like a jumble sale after a tornado’s been through.

But fear not! I’ve decided to gather all these nuggets of wisdom. Some nuggets… some wisdom. (or what passes for such nuggets of wisdom after a few too many meetings) into this here podcast. Well why now, I hear you ask? Some of you… maybe. Well, partly because people keep telling me I should write a book. So I did!

And this podcast explores a little bit more about the book and some of the themes.

So, what can you expect from “Stuff and Things”? Well, it’s a bit like the British weather – unpredictable, occasionally gloomy, but with surprising moments of brilliance. We’ve got some serious bits, some rather silly bits, and probably everything in between.

Will it add some value to your life? Probably not, maybe, perhaps a little.

Now, for those of you wondering if there’s a grand theme to all this – well, your guess is as good as mine. We’ll muddle through it together, like explorers venturing into the unknown, armed with nothing but a stiff upper lip and a packet of Custard Creams on the side.

And for the structural enthusiasts out there (you know, the type who alphabetise their spice rack), we’ll be tackling these topics one at a time, in a surprisingly linear fashion. I know, I’m as shocked as you are. It’s almost as if I’ve planned this.

Prepare yourself for a mediocre ramble through the overgrown garden of my professional experiences. In the coming episodes, we’ll explore the “Stuff” – those bite-sized pieces of wisdom, nuggets, call them what you will, that have somehow stuck in my brain over the years. And later, we’ll explore “Things” – longer musings that have mainly come from my blog over time. Don’t worry, I won’t call it “thought leadership.”

Ready for this magical mystery tour? Then stay tuned and keep your expectations comfortably low. This is Nicholas Gill, your slightly confused guide to the world of “Stuff and Things,” signing off for now.

Good afternoon.
