Episode 4 – People Buy People
Hello everyone and welcome to the latest edition of Stuff and Things. I’m your host, Nicholas Gill, and today we’ll be exploring a profound truth that changed my perspective forever, ‘people buy people’.
So let’s dive deep into the wisdom that has power to transform not just your business but your entire approach to relationships.
Let me share a story from my early days in advertising. I was working in an agency called Tullo Marshall Warren, housed on the Kings Road in Chelsea [London].
You’re part of a plucky, 60 strong team and the battle for the prime window seat overlooking the bustling Kings Road below was fiercer than the struggle for the last biscuit in the biscuit tin. But while the view from those windows truly was impressive, the real view of the human nature I gained there was far more valuable.
Only just.
So, one day, Richard Marshall, one of the senior leaders, he shared something that would fundamentally shift my understanding of business and life. “People buy people,” he said.
Really simple words, but they carry a profound truth. And that truth echoes through absolutely every interaction that we have.
Think about it for a moment, when was the last time you chose to work with someone, not because they have the best credentials, but because something about them resonated with you? And that’s not coincidence. That’s human nature.
The truth is, in our digital age, where we’re more connected yet somehow more distant than ever. Authentic human connection has become our most valuable currency. You can have the most innovative product. You can have the most groundbreaking idea, but without genuine human connection, it’s like having a beautiful painting in a dark room… unseen. Unappreciated.
But here’s the challenge, you can’t fake authenticity. It has to come from a place of genuine care, a real investment in others. When you truly believe in what you’re doing and genuinely care about the people you’re working with, that energy becomes magnetic.
Remember this, in a world where everything can be automated, replicated or mass produced, genuine human connection remains unique and irreplaceable.
That was deep wasn’t it?
Sorry. Until next time.
Good afternoon!
